Problem: Slipping of Bone Marrow Needle [BMN] during 90 degrees off axis ‘across’ the T handle Project: Design Ergonomic BMN Handle with leverage in all orientation Hey I am Banana BMN. Cool. Curios to know about me.. Lets get started. Well, story began from a problem that Professor Paul gave us during our final project bleeding phase..Choosing a problem from 15 was easy and never thought it would be a nightmare thereafter..Yep..it was a so called gaussian everest curve as the professor always mentions. And here I define my origin, Slipping of Bone Marrow Needle during 90 degrees off axis ‘across’ the T handle. Dont get panic.. Because I did :) Here is how i visualised the problem in a non typical way of speaker and physical forces. Real solution to a problem lies in the problem..Physician does not get leverage when tilted at an angle While using bone marrow needle. They tend to change the hand throughout the surgery due to the discomfort. Bone marrow needle works appropriately when held perpendicular to the body, but not provide leverage at all angles. Through mindmaps of general handles, grip devices, medical device handles, bone marrow handles, handling bone marrow, I began sketching shape of handles, grip positions, shape of comfort and easiness to handle. With this i came into a conclusion that Grip, shape and ergonomics were the key factors that lead to my design. While sketching the ergonomics, I found my name, Banana BMN. Before jumping to the CAD design.. I paused.. Pondering Why? I have no more strength to redesign and bleed, so this time i looked what my manufacturer and production lead want to tell about me. I sneaked out to other designs, and started sketching based on manufacturing, assembling, calculations, and handle considerations. Finally I am here ..considering Grip, shape and ergonomics . My body can be made of ABS and my overmolded needle by stainless steel.I am banana ended with grip on the top which covers the inner arm , groves on the bottom for better holding covering between finger grips and needle for piercing and cradle for bone marrow aspiration. Once I am in the hands of the surgeons, would it be an ergonomic BMN Handle with leverage in all orientation?? Yes, Banana is evolved to fit into all hands. It was a long tiring day.. Thinking all these let me take a nap..
